Compatibility and integration considerations

The FCLGA1151 socket is shared with earlier Intel generations, but this processor runs only on 300 series chipsets, which Intel lists as B360, B365, H310, H370, Q370, Z370 and Z390. It will not boot on 100 or 200 series boards even though it fits the socket, so verify the chipset rather than the socket when ordering against an existing platform. Boards that shipped before this generation launched may need a BIOS update before they will post. The 35 W envelope is what makes six cores and twelve threads viable in a small chassis, but the base clock is 2.40 GHz against 3.20 GHz on the 65 W i7-8700, and the 25 W configurable TDP-down mode drops it further to 1.90 GHz, so confirm which mode the board firmware selects before sizing sustained performance. Memory runs in dual channel DDR4 at up to 2666 MT/s with a 128 GB ceiling and ECC is not supported. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 requires display outputs on the board.

Typical use cases

This processor is the low power version of the top six core Coffee Lake desktop part, so it appears in mini PCs, thin clients, medical carts and fanless industrial boxes that need twelve threads inside a 35 W budget. It is the part to reach for when a workload was sized on an i7-8700 but the chassis cannot dissipate 65 W.
