Compatibility and integration considerations
This processor uses the FCLGA1200 socket and Intel 400 series chipsets, so it will not drop into the FCLGA1151 boards used by the 6th through 9th generation parts despite the similar pin count. Embedded designs pair it with the embedded chipsets of that series, which Intel lists as H420E, Q470E and W480E, and it also runs on the standard 400 series desktop chipsets. Ten cores inside 65 W means the 2.80 GHz base clock is the number that governs sustained all core work, and a chassis qualified on a lower core count part should be re-checked for sustained thermal load rather than assumed equivalent. Intel lists the Thermal Velocity Boost frequency for this part at the same 4.70 GHz as its Max Turbo Frequency, so there is no additional headroom above the turbo figure. Memory runs in dual channel DDR4 at up to 2933 MT/s with a 128 GB ceiling. ECC is not supported, so designs that need it on this socket have to look at the Xeon W-1200 parts instead. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 requires display outputs on the board.
Typical use cases
This processor is the top of the embedded Comet Lake line and suits the densest edge workloads on this platform, such as multi stream inference, industrial servers and consolidated control and analytics on one box. It is the part to specify when the alternative is adding a second machine, and the twenty threads and 20 MB of cache are what separate it from the i7-10700E in the same thermal envelope.
