Intel Core i5-2400 2nd Gen Desktop Processor, 4-Core, LGA1155

The Intel Core i5-2400 is a desktop processor with four cores and four threads, built on Intel's 2nd generation Core architecture, codenamed Sandy Bridge. It runs at a base frequency of 3.10 GHz and reaches 3.40 GHz under Turbo Boost, backed by 6 MB of Intel Smart Cache within a 95 W thermal envelope. It installs in an FCLGA1155 socket and supports DDR3 memory at speeds up to 1333 MT/s, and Intel now files it under its Legacy Core collection, which makes it a replacement part rather than a design-in choice.

The Intel Core i5-3470 is a desktop processor with four cores and four threads, built on Intel's 3rd generation Core architecture, codenamed Ivy Bridge. It runs at a base frequency of 3.20 GHz and reaches 3.60 GHz under Turbo Boost, backed by 6 MB of Intel Smart Cache within a 77 W thermal envelope. It installs in an FCLGA1155 socket and supports DDR3 memory at speeds up to 1600 MT/s, which makes it the faster and cooler of the two LGA1155 generations and the one to specify when either will fit.

Additional details

Compatibility and integration considerations

The FCLGA1155 socket carries Sandy Bridge and its Ivy Bridge successor, so this processor runs on the 6 series boards it launched alongside and on 7 series boards, which Intel lists as Q75, Q77, H77, Z75, Z77 and B75, once the board has a current BIOS. It does not fit the LGA1150 boards of the following generation, and a matching socket alone does not confirm support, so check the board's processor list and BIOS revision before ordering against an existing platform. Memory runs in dual channel DDR3 at up to 1333 MT/s with a 32 GB ceiling, and ECC is not supported. There is no Hyper-Threading on this part, so it presents four threads rather than eight, and the integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 is the lower of the two Sandy Bridge graphics tiers. Cooling should be rated for the full 95 W, which is the highest envelope in this family and well above the 65 W parts that replaced it.

Typical use cases

This processor is bought almost entirely as a replacement for systems already built on it, in office desktops, industrial PCs and thin clients that were qualified on 6 or 7 series boards. Buyers should know that Intel stopped issuing servicing updates on 31 December 2019, so no further microcode or security fixes are coming from the manufacturer, and a machine that needs a current patch level belongs on a newer platform.
