Compatibility and integration considerations
Intel lists this processor as compatible with the 7 series chipsets Q75, Q77, H77, Z75, Z77 and B75, and it also runs on the 6 series boards of the previous generation once the board has a BIOS that recognises Ivy Bridge, which is not a given on hardware that shipped before the launch. It does not fit the LGA1150 boards of the following generation. Memory runs in dual channel DDR3 at up to 1600 MT/s with a 32 GB ceiling, and ECC is not supported. Two differences matter when it is swapped into a Sandy Bridge board: the PCI Express controller moves up to revision 3.0 but only runs at 3.0 speeds on a 7 series board, and the integrated Intel HD Graphics 2500 actually starts lower than the HD Graphics 2000 it replaces, at 650 MHz against 850 MHz, reaching the same 1.10 GHz under load. Cooling rated for the 95 W parts of the previous generation covers this one, since the envelope drops to 77 W.
Typical use cases
This processor is bought as a replacement or a modest upgrade for systems already built on LGA1155, in office desktops, industrial PCs and thin clients qualified on 6 or 7 series boards. Buyers should know that Intel stopped issuing servicing updates on 31 December 2019, so no further microcode or security fixes are coming from the manufacturer, and a machine that needs a current patch level belongs on a newer platform.
