Compatibility and integration considerations
This processor needs an FCLGA3647 board built for 2nd generation Xeon Scalable, which is a different platform from the FCLGA4189 and FCLGA4677 sockets used by the 3rd generation onward, so it is not an upgrade path from or to them. Memory runs in six channels of DDR4 at up to 2400 MT/s with a 1 TB ceiling and ECC throughout, and populating all six channels per socket is what the memory bandwidth figure assumes. The part scales to two sockets, so a dual socket board takes a matched pair. There is no integrated graphics, which is normal for this class and means the board supplies display output through its BMC. Cooling and power delivery need to be rated for 100 W per socket.

This processor is bought for dual socket rack servers running virtualisation, file and application workloads, and for replacement into fleets already standardised on Cascade Lake. The R suffix marks the refreshed Cascade Lake bin, offering more cores and clock at the same price position as the original 4214, which is why it is the common Silver tier part in this generation.
